2.4. Management of an Accommodation

2.4.1. Management Styles

Personality, experience and education are important parts of the competence of the entrepreneur. His guts and nerves make the picture complete. Those characteristics will determine how clients are treated, how well the personnel is motivated, how much effort will be put in company development and promotion, etc. There are as many management styles as there are managers. Nevertheless, some general management styles can be distinguished. In the next paragraph, you will find a brief description of the positive characteristics of each ‘typical’ manager. (You may add for yourself which you think may be the shortcomings of each type of manager.) The perfect manager, (which probably does not exist), combines the positive qualities of all three types mentioned.

The technical manager

The technical manger always tries to optimize the physical conditions. This person is responsible for maintenance of furnishings, equipment and ensures a technically high quality product for his clients.

The social manager

The social manager starts a company convinced that the business can help the world by helping other people. This type of manager has always time for the customers and likes to provide them with advice (sometimes even when without being asked!).

The economic manager

The economic manager is the pragmatist. This type of manager will judge all the investments in time and money by the economical prospects they have. All motives (and activities) can be traced back to the aim to make money.

Nobody completely fits into one of these management styles as every person has some elements of each type. It is good to realize what type of manager you are and to identify your shortcomings. This will enable you to work on your weaknesses and try to improve them. By having an enterprise with several employees, you can appoint people who have other styles but still are able to work and communicate efficiently with you.
