Section 2: Starting a Rural Accommodation

2.4. Management of an Accommodation

Once you have created your own accommodation you have to manage it efficiently in order to make sure the objectives are realised. In a private company the main objective will be the economical result: how much money do you gain? Management is focused on achieving ‘production’. As long as you are the only one working in your accommodation, good management is enough to make a successful company. If you get employees, you do not only need management skills, but also you must have the capacities of a leader. A leader tries to modify the attitude of other people, e.g. let them work together efficiently. Not only production is the objective of a good leader, but also maintaining an excellent working spirit among all employees, creation of efficient ways of co-operation within the company etc. In this unit on management we will briefly discuss some styles of managing your company and dealing with your personnel. There are many books written on management and leadership. We do not pretend to give you an overview of all the theories, but just will give a short introduction of those facets of management which may be useful when you start.
