Section 2: Starting a Rural Accommodation

2.1. From Idea to Plan: Creativity Sequence

It is not easy to start a rural accommodation. Thinking and planning how to realise your own accommodation goes through a number of stages in a certain order, which is called the circle of creativity, or creativity sequence. The creativity sequence (see below) applies to developing your own accommodation business as well.

Idea, wish

Fantasy

Believe that it can become reality

Express, share it with others

Research

Plan

Decide

Go ←→No go

Do = Start

Receive expected benefits

Get acknowledged

Enjoy and relax

New idea, wish (return to the initial stage and restart)

If you are holding this course in your hands, you are somewhere at the initial stages. Before you actually take a decision to start an accommodation businessand switch to action, you should develop a concept for your business. It means that you should think through all the possibilities you might use and all the limiting conditions you will have to operate in(in the Creativity Sequence, this corresponds to the move from Idea or Fantasy to Plan, in blue on the scheme). Thisis needed to weigh whether your business can be a success and decide whether it is worth starting it. Developing the concept that fits to your particular situation, your own capabilities and financial possibilities, interests and needs of the potential market, etc. should be done in several steps. The general logic of the steps will help you draw an outline of your product, marketing strategy, financial plan, estimation of feasibility, etc. Following the steps describedbelow, you should make up a comprehensive plan.
