The law varies with regard to the environment among different European countries, although there are certain laws common to all of them. Particularly noteworthy, due to its importance and dissemination, is the Habitats Directive (Directive 92/43/EEC of the Council of 21 May 1992 relating to the conservation of natural habitats and wild fauna and flora), which created the Natura 2000 Network. This is a network that comprises special areas of conservation (SACs) designated by the member states in accordance with said directive. It also includes the special protection areas for birds (SPAS), established in accordance with the Birds Directive 2009/147/EEC.

There are laws at the European level in the area of waste management, water treatment, biodiversity, environmental noise, etc. The European directives link the states of the union, although they become obligatory when they are transposed by the state.
