Development of Rural Tourism

Rural tourism started around 1970, when there appeared a demand for staying at a farm. In the Netherlands, the rural tourist product started especially as camping on the farm, with most farm services linked to route-bound activities as cycling, walking or horse-riding. Nowadays a great variety of rural tourist products are provided: tea-gardens, bed and breakfast, galleries, holiday houses, guided tours, horse riding, animal farms, children playgrounds and much more. Dutch legislation restricts camping at the farm: in low season a maximum of 10 tents is allowed in most regions. In high season, some local authorities permit 15 tents. Local rural tourism organizations: in every county in the Netherlands, farmers and other rural entrepreneurs have started their own marketing organizations. In the Netherlands there are no large areas with typical rural characteristics.

Starting as rural camping at the farm, there are now also a lot of rural Bed and Breakfast accomodations. There are a few hotels in the country.

Some Dutch facts:

The Rural Tourism target groups are in general of Dutch origin. It includes families with young children in the high season. In the low season the 50+ seniors are the most important target group. However, also young couples, including a marriage on the farm/manor house, and young pupils of city schools (how to milk a cow) are becoming a more and more important target group.
