Definition and Mission

Rural tourism is the use of the typical qualities of rural areas such as space, silence, nature, agriculture and culture for tourism purposes. Rural Tourism Accommodations and Activities are on a relative small scale. Most rural accommodations are (former) farms. Agri-tourism can be defined as all kind of recreation and tourism on farms with an economic interest.

Rural tourism, especially agri-tourism, is stimulated to create additional incomes for farmers. Some of them are forced to reduce their intensive cattle, pig and chicken farming to more extensive farming. Rural tourism has to create new (part-time) jobs, has to stimulate people to stay in the rural areas. Examples of such jobs are chambermaid, gardener, all round worker in an accommodations, nature and historical guide, sailing and horse riding instructor, etc. Renting recreation goods like a bike, horse or canoe is stimulated.

Rural tourism has to stimulate the use of local and regional agricultural products by the tourists. Think of a food chain of farmer-factory-shop-accommodations and restaurants. Also specific products (white wine or trout) and souvenir products (traditional handicraft like wooden shoes, old fashion, etc.) can be stimulated by rural tourism.
