Answers to the Questions of Sections 1 – 9

Section 1: Tourism, Rural Tourism and Accommodation

  1. Tourism is travel for recreational, leisure or business purposes. The World Tourism Organization defines tourists as people who "travel to and stay in places outside their usual environment for more than twenty-four (24) hours and not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes not related to the exercise of an activity remunerated from within the place visited". Tourism has become a popular global leisure activity.
  2. Regional tourism is tourism concentrated in a region. A region is an area that can be distinguished of other area’s by its own culture and structure. A regional tourist is a tourist visiting a region or province other than in which she/he has a normal residence but with a defined geographic region. The term Rural tourism is used when the rural culture is a key component of the product on offer. The distinguishing feature of tourism products in rural tourism is the wish to give visitors a personalized contact, a taste of the physical and human environment of the countryside and, as far as possible, allow them to participate in the activities, traditions and lifestyles of local people.
  3. Ecotourism is a more ‘alternative’ form of tourism that is primarily nature-based. It must in some way assist with the conservation effort for biodiversity and involve the participation of local communities and cultures in a way that protects their quality of life and sustains their well-being. It should involve a learning experience and be carried out in an ecologically sustainable way.
  4. No, it isn`t, because farm tourism doesn`t have to be eco-tourism oriented.
  5. A B&B (Bed & Breakfast) is a private house with a host where spare furnished rooms (usually 2 to 5) are rented to overnight tourists, full breakfast is included in the price. Guest rooms can have a separate entrance, kitchen and other facilities; the bathroom can be shared or private. B&Bs are small, intimate, non-expensive and offer personalized service. They can be located in a village, near the mountains, in the city, etc.
  6. A Farmhouse is a farm in a rural area where tourists are offered spare rooms. The specific features are that the host has farm animals and an agricultural estate; tourism is only a part-time additional business. Apart from the B&B services, tourists are usually offered to be involved in the farm activities (e.g., handling farm animals).
  7. Inn is a smaller establishment in a rural setting providing overnight accommodation to tourists. The price includes only overnight. Inns may or may not serve food. The cottage is a separate unit suited for winter and provided solely for the guests' use (self-contained),usually for families on vacation or corporate reunions. It can consist of a bedroom/s, a living room, a kitchen and a washroom; typically with cooking facilities and private baths.
  8. The wise use of resources such as basic materials, water and energy. The prevention of population. The protection and where possible the enhancement of biodiversity.
  9. See specific country review.
