Section 8: Environmentally Friendly Accommodation
8.4. More Aspects of Being Environmentally Friendly

8.4.3. Care for Individual Needs: Vegetarian Cuisine, Organic Food, Non-Smoker Areas

If you show interest in your visitors and try to adjust the accommodation to their needs, it will only add to the positive image of your accommodation. At certain points, the interests of the environment and individual preferences coincide.

It is said that it is impossible to satisfy everybody, because tastes differ. There can be distinguished some new trends in food preferences of visitors that are becoming more popular. Firstly, the number of vegetarians is constantly growing, and availability of vegetarian menus including vegan breakfast can be important for some customers and gain you another USP. It should be kept in mind that it only needs to have one vegetarian in the family to dictate the choice of the accommodation and places for eating out for all the other members. Secondly, the interest to biologic or organic produce is increasing. In this respect, it might be an idea to consider growing food in your own garden (including fruit for jam to go with tea during long winter evenings) or use always fresh local products. In general, tourists appreciate special character of the produce offered and individual attention. If, for instance, you offer tea with infusion of herbs picked locally by your family, it will increase the value of service for customers and will make it very special.

Nowadays more and more people prefer to keep a healthy, nicotine-free lifestyle. Such customers avoid being in areas together with smokers, even if rooms are equipped with good air conditioning systems. In this regard, smoke-free floors and rooms, areas free from cigarette smoke that are separated by a door or other barrier in restaurants and common lounges are a good practice, especially if substantial a part of your clients are families with children.

Your efforts and customer’s personal participation will help make them appreciate the special character of the place where they are staying and distinguish the host by his care and attention from many others.
