Section 8: Environmentally Friendly Accommodation
8.3. Resource - and Cost-Saving Measures
8.3.1. Energy Saving

Use of Renewable Energy and Gas

Use of renewable energy sources can be the best available option under certain conditions, depending on the regional resources and local climate. So, for instance, in the northern windy areas (especially on the islands) windmills are very effective in bringing the energy costs down, while in remote forested areas without (reliable) electricity provision dry wood used as a fuel might be the only reliable solution.

In sunny area’s solar cells are the source of having “free” energy.

Use of gas instead of electricity can sometimes provide for cost saving, especially, it is true if gas is used for instantaneous water heating in bathrooms and kitchens, or for cooking.

The measures outlined in this section bring results in practice. The example of an existing hotel placed below will give you an idea of how much energy can be saved by application of some environmentally friendly measures:

EXAMPLE: In Derwentwater Hotel, Cumbria, UK energy consumption was reduced by 45% between 1994 and 1999 due to the introduction of energy control systems; use of low energy light bulbs; changing appliances for energy efficient equivalent and involving staff in minimization of kitchen appliances use.
