Section 8: Environmentally Friendly Accommodation
8.3. Resource - and Cost-Saving Measures
8.3.1. Energy Saving

Energy-Efficient Household Appliances

A typical set of household appliances in accommodation units includes washing machine, dish-washer, refrigerator and freezer, heater/air conditioner, vacuum cleaner, office equipment and smaller kitchen electric appliances such as toaster, coffee machine, etc. Over the lifetime of most appliances the amount of energy used represents the biggest part of the overall cost, making sense to look for a more energy efficient option when in need of replacement.

Nowadays domestic appliances have energy labelling allowing for comparison of energy consumption. Normally this is either the EU energy efficiency labelling system ranging from A to G or the US energy stars system ranging from 1 to 6. Also, recently on the market appeared EU eco-labelled products (marked with EU Flower) that possess best energy efficiency characteristics and a number of other positive qualities such as limited noise, longer lifetime and limitation of use of carcinogenic and toxic substances. An example of such appliances can be an eco-labelled refrigerator: it bears energy efficiency index around 42%, meaning that it is better in energy efficiency than class A appliances, its noise level does not exceed < 42dBA (lower than usual fridges), the commercial guarantee of functioning is valid for at least 3 years from the date of delivery, and at request of the owner it can be taken back for recycling free of charge.

Also, for optimising the use of energy and minimizing the amount of energy bill attributed to appliances some very simple measures such as correct positioning should not be forgotten. Positioning is defined by basic logic of not wasting heat flows. So, for instance, it is not worth placing an oven side by side with a refrigerator or a freezer, the same refers to placing a stove in conditions of the cold climate close to the window which is not draught-proof, etc.
