Section 6: Cleaning and Maintenance, Sanitary Rules

6.2. Cleaners

Special care shall be taken of the use of chemicals of different types for cleaning and hygienic purposes. There are several rules that are worth following in housekeeping in the accommodation business.

All-purpose cleaners and detergents shall be applied in the amounts appropriate for certain situations. So, for example, it is important to load the prescribed measure of detergent in the washing machine – this can prevent skin irritation of your guests, reduce expenses on the washing powder, and prolong the lifetime of the linen.

Portioning and use of minimum amounts for reaching optimal hygiene results refers also to disinfectants. The latter should be used where necessary if required for compliance with legal hygiene requirements. Generally, when buying whiteners for baths/toilets or disinfectants for swimming pools, try and choose the safest option.

Most chemicals are dangerous and have to be stored out of reach of children (and preferably of all adult visitors as well), e.g., in a locked cabin. Chemicals should never be put in places where food is stored or prepared. Bottles and other packing material must be checked for leakage and maximum storage time. Mini-inspections can be scheduled and made on a regular basis. If you have a large business, it is recommended that you keep a logbook with the names, dates, amounts of each chemical product in stock. Besides, you should have complete information on antidotes for emergency treatment of anyone accidentally ingesting or coming into contact with any chemical you have.
