Cleaning of the guestrooms shall be done every day, though it might be not that easy to do a very thorough job of cleaning when the guests’ belongings are in the room, particularly, if cloths and different items are scattered all over. Regular cleaning includes making the bed(s), vacuuming the floor cover and fabrics, dusting non-soft furniture and objects, cleaning mirrors, emptying wastebaskets and ashtrays, cleaning bathroom and WC, wet-cleaning the floor. During cleaning it is preferable that windows are slightly open so that the smell of the cleaners disappears and fresh air comes in.
Replacing the bed linen with clean, fresh one is a more seldom
activity: it can take place on request of the guest (they should be made aware of
it at the reception!) or twice a week in higher-class accommodations and once a
week in simpler accommodations. Bed linen can be either white or coloured. Both
have advantages: the white one is more traditional and gives an impression of freshness
but demands regular soft bleaching. The coloured one is more resistant to wear and
can be chosen to fit the colours and atmosphere of the room. Bath linen (towels)
should be replaced daily or, in any case, more often than bed linen. It is up to
you whether you make the laundry in the accommodationor have it done at a commercial
laundry. All the linen should be washed at a high temperature and preferably with
softeners.
Work such as cleaning the windows, polishing the furniture are done infrequently but on a regular basis.
A vacant room that was cleaned after the last guest’s departure needs to be checked before the arrival of the next guest – whether everything works all right, whether the room is clean and pleasant. Clean bed and bath linen are to be placed in the room not after departure but just before check-into preserve their freshness and appeal. Rooms - when not in use - quickly acquire a special smell typical for a closed uninhabited space, although it might not be noticed by the people who are constantly present at the accommodation. To avoid it, introduce the habit of leaving the windows open for a while every time before arrival of the guests.
Maintaining the appearance of the guest room also includes attending to the items that make the room comfortable and attractive. The paint peeling off on one wall, damaged wallpaper on another, a cracked lamp or mirror, burnt cigarette patch in the carpet – all this makes the rooms less appealing to the next guests and decreases the quality of your accommodation. Check the work of all facilities (lighting, heating, cooking devices) and state of all the interior objects (including such minor things as hangers in the closet) when the guest has checked out. Plan in advance and do refurnishing and redecorating every certain number of years.
