Section 5: Extra Facilities and Services Provided

5.7. Activities with basic equipment

Depending on the specifics of your region, you can consider purchasing some basic equipment that would allow you to rent it out. It can be bikes, horse carriages, fishing tackle, rowing boats or in wintertime skis, skates, etc. The organization of these activities does not need a professional approach or full-time devotion but can make the vacations of your guests much brighter and more remarkable leavingbehind nice memories.

If you do not have any equipment or required experience to organize entertainment for your guests yourself, you can think of your neighbours or relatives – what skills and equipment they have, who would be interested in cooperation with you and on which terms, how reliable they are, etc. An example of such an activity can be fishing, rides in horsecarriages or sleighs, etc.

If you have a lake or a river nearby, nothing can compare for some of your guests with a fishing experience. If you are not a passionate fisherman or do not have time, you will need some fishing tackle and a nearby-living fisherman who knows the surroundings. Further your guests can either continue enjoying on their own, or under some supervision from his side. Most likelyon such an occasion your guests will also need a lunchboxand fish equipment/rent. Usually a (half)-day fishing experience can be arranged on request and brings the desired diversityin the holidays of even not so passionate fishermen. The only thing that requires verification and should be treated carefully is a fishing licence.

The nearby lake can give opportunity for swimming or some beach activity. In the reception you should make some data about the actual temperature of the water.

Generally, the choice of activities offered at the accommodation is defined by the interests of your clientele. If you have eco-tourists among the guests, night hiking in the forest and listening to the owls can prove very interesting and successful. For more ideas of diverse activities in nature and tips on their implementation, it is recommended that you study the Module Biosphere Discovery.

Another level of outdoor entertainment is providing services on a constant commercial basis. It actually means running a parallel business, although the majority of theclients will be the guests of your accommodation. This kind of activities can include guided excursions, mountain climbing, reindeer sledging, snow-shooeing, folklore dance/song performances, etc. All of them imply a certain degree of difficulty in organization of the event or permanent employment of professionals. This kind of outdoor entertainment requires a lot of your time and efforts; you cannot so easily combine it with your regular accommodation business.

If you plan to get engaged in these winter activities and open up a new business, see the Amber Module “Activities in Rural Tourism” and the AURORA 1 Modules Hiking, Nordic Walking and Ice-skating. These modules contain everything that is necessary to know to start and successfully run such a business.
