5.6. Air Conditioning

Air conditioning is the system that can really cool our surroundings and atmosphere. They can really change the weather of the rooms in no timeand can create an atmosphere in which we can really feel comfortable and relax. They have become very popular and a very hot product in the electric markets all around the world.

There are four main types of air-conditioning units. They are:

Window mounted: The most common type, window-mounted units temporarily slide into double-hung window openings. You can buy a cooling-only unit or a cooling/heating unit for supplemental heat if your home is located in an area with moderate temperatures.
Pros: Low cost, most work with existing electrical wiring in your home, and they're easy to install.
Cons: They're typically designed only for double-hung windows. If you have sliding windows, you may need a special installation kit. If you live in the north, it's best to remove units at the end of the season.

Wall-mounted: These room air conditioners are permanently mounted in a wall by attaching a metal sleeve through the wall and sliding in the AC chassis from inside. Wall-mounted units also come in cooling-only or cooling/heating varieties.
Pros: Aesthetically appealing, fit more securely than window units, no storage necessary, easy to repair and replace. Best of all, if you have only one window in the room, a wall-mounted model will still let sunlight into the space.
Cons: Installation can get costly -- you must cut an opening through an outside wall, and larger units may require installation of a dedicated 220-volt line. What's more, many models don't include the exterior metal sleeve, so you'll need to purchase it separately.

Window/wall-mounted: This versatile type can be temporarily installed in a window or permanently mounted in a wall.
Pros: Ideal if you're buying an air conditioner for, say, a rental apartment window and you may want to later install it in a home wall.
Cons: Window/wall-mounted models generally don't include window installation kits -- the nuts, bolts and frame needed to secure the unit in a window. Depending on the plug type and/or amperage, you may need a dedicated 220-volt circuit.

Portable: This is a mobile air conditioner on wheels that can be rolled from room to room and includes a tube to exhaust heat out of a window or through an opening in a wall.
Pros: It's easy to store at the end of the season.
Cons: Slightly higher-priced than comparable window units, eats up floor space, and the exhaust tube must be installed each time it's moved.

Air conditioning is very helpful in the hot season, because it provides us with cool and fresh air. We not only see at the advantages of air conditioners or air conditioning, but also look at the disadvantages. Air conditioning has also some disadvantages in it. Every air conditioning unit has some of disadvantages in it.

The window mounted air conditioners are designed to fit in a wall. These units are not big and these can be easily installed in the windows. The advantages of these air conditioners are that, these can adjust each room temperature and these can be easily removed and stored at the end of the season. The disadvantages are that, these units really eliminate the outside view from the window and these should be quickly removed when the winter or cooler weather arrives. Wall mounted units is another choice in the hot season. The advantages of these units are that window is not blocked and you have no need to remove in the cooler weather. The disadvantages are that these are not easy to install. It is very difficult to hide these units in the winter. The free standing portable units have their own advantages. These can be easily moved in the homes and no mounting and installation is required. They cost more than the window mounted units and this is the only main disadvantage of these units. There are so many other types of air conditioning units to avail, but almost every of them have their advantages, as well as the disadvantages.
