Common areas that serve the purposes of social interaction, entertainment and relaxation are usually present in all accommodations. They can be separate lounges or combined with dining areas.
Such an area can vary in design and interior but its atmosphere should be very welcoming. Paintings are good for making the place cosier, they can range from a gentle watercolour of an apple tree in blossom to a daring work of a modern artist.
The common lounge should meet a number of functional requirements - it should have an easy access from all the rooms, fire safety devices, and acoustic insulation from the sleeping area. Besides, it is important to have good ventilation and install ashtrays in the smoking areas (if you allow smoking inside the building). Common lounges are furnished with practical things – durable, easily washable sofas, arm-chairs/chairs, tables, shelves, and necessary equipment.
You should always keep in mind that entertainment can be one of the major factors in keeping the interest of those guests who stay more than one night at your place. Indoor entertainment gains a special importance when the weather becomes bad and the people have to spend most of the day inside the building. In this case, evenings often seem too long and unbearable, the people become bored and irritated and start complaining. To prevent it, you should think about different entertainment possibilities.
First of all, common lounge equipment usually includes some basic technical devices for entertainment such as a computer with internet and / TV-set, a video or a music installation with a set of tapes / CDs that are given out individually at the reception.
In addition to TV, you can provide your guests with reading. A mini-library can be started with a few magazines, entertaining books (e.g., detectives, short stories, novels, etc.) and materials on the region you live in, local traditions, architecture, history, etc. Later on you will see that some of guests will enlarge your home library by leaving their own books.
You should also think of opportunities provided by having simple indoor games at hand. This can be chess, cards, or billiard and ping-pong. For children you can place a few colour pencils, paint or markers, a Lego table, etc - the things that will make the rainy day more interesting.
If the common lounge is popular with your guests, and your clientele is rather young, you can consider buying additional equipment for organizing parties. Also, depending on the interests of your target clients, it might be worth thinking about purchasing some things for banquets, celebrations and meetings.
