Section 2: Starting a Rural Accommodation
2.4. Management of an Accommodation

2.4.8. Accommodation Evaluation

Evaluation of the accommodation includes evaluation of its performance and management. This can only be done when the aims of the company are clearly stated. What do you want to offer, which are the quality standard? Should all be clearly predetermined? Especially at the beginning, you have to deal with a great number of uncertainties so try to avoid to setting very high goals and standards right at the start because, chances are, you will not reach them in time or the situation may turn out to be quite different from your initial expectations. Set your targets in such a way that they are achievable and within a relatively short time. This gives you a tool to evaluate your management and adapt and improve it. Formulate your aims always in a positive way. Instead of aiming to reduce debts by X Euro, you say you aim to make X dollars profit. In practice, it does not make any difference, but the picture you create of yourself and your accomodation is quite different. Aims also should be as clear and as quantitative as possible. Instead of aiming to increase sales next year, you may state that the aim is to increase sales next year from X to Y thousand Euro. This makes evaluation much easier. And, from the mistakes you make, you will learn quickly how to make more accurate predictions and improve the management. Clearly stating aims of your company and regularly evaluating them (even when you ‘do not have time’) may be the imputes for a rapid expansion of your business.
