Introduction/General Objectives

In the European Union there are over half a million tourist accommodations ranging from impressive ***** hotels in the cities to simple log huts in wilderness areas. The seasonal load of accommodations varies greatly, with occupancy reaching its peak in summer or winter time (e.g., in the Netherlands it is lower in winter, while in the North of Sweden it is on the contrary high in snow season). Accommodation owners would prefer to see the occupancy more or less even throughout the year. Rural activities as outdoor cooking, entertainment, walking, cycling, horse riding, water sports, fishing and in wintertime cross-country skiing, skating, snowshoeing, etc. are giving good chances of high occupancy during all seasons and stable profit for the locations. In the EU AMBER and AURORA  Projects you will find training materials on most of these activities.

The Accommodation module provides information on how to operate in accommodations located in regional, rural and mountainous areas. Generally accommodations in rural tourism are characterized by a small scale of facilities and activities, low environmental impact, and provision of service to a specific category of tourists. These tourists are flexible, look for active ways to spend vacation, and travel with a purpose of self-, nature- and world discovery. In the first section the student gets an idea what rural tourism is in Europe. The other sections are describing facilities and services, location and surroundings, service quality and prices, professionalism of personnel and efficiency of advertisement, and other factors determining the success of such an accommodation. This module can serve as a basis for starting and running your own accommodation business.

After studying this module, you will have:
