Section 7: Accident Prevention and First Aid

  1. Insurance, smoke alarms/detectors, fire extinguishers, fire blankets, clearly marked emergency exits in the building and rooms, fire escape plan, staff training on fire emergency procedure, secure storage of inflammable/combustible materials, maintenance of electrical system, control of bonfire/barbeque area. Requirements for accommodations of different types can range from country to country.
  2. Clear building plan with an escape route and all possible exits in each room and the corridors (e.g., placed near the door), preferably accompanied with instructions what to do in case of fire, a map with an emergency exit route and the local Fire Department phone number placed at the visible spot at the reception; information on fire prevention (warnings in the smoking area, instructions for electrical/gas facilities use).
  3. 1) Call the local Fire Dept. 2) Try to fight the fire with an extinguisher (only if it is feasible) 3)Help evacuate the people 4)Try to define the number of guests present at the accommodation and whether all of them escaped. First aid to the injured 5) Phone your insurance company and report the fire and make an accurate damage inventory 6) Take care of your damaged property.

E.g., safe deposit box; supervision of the entrance; adequate lighting of the building, walkways and parking lot; bolt locks in the rooms, warning decals, etc. In order to protect yourself from theft claims you should make a clear statement of responsibility in case of theft and make the clients aware of it, and provide security advice to the guests.
  5. Furnished ground protection on all electrical outlets; regular inspections of furniture, fixtures, any equipment; adequate lighting; no glass in doors; slip-resistant materials and grabs in bathrooms.
  6. Additional measures: safe electric plugs; reliable high banisters; secure storage of chemicals and cleaners as well as matches, lighters, gas, fire extinguishers; control over the swimming pool; well cover or fence near the steep slope; safe barbeque place; special children-safety gadgets for appliances such as stove knob cover, appliance latch, etc.
