Separate Waste Collection and Composting

First of all, it is essential to prevent the tourists from polluting the area around your accommodation not to end up in piles of trash all over. For this, it is enough to provide a sufficient number of garbage cans – and the surrounding area remains attractive.

In some countries of the EU separate waste collection has become a tradition and is incorporated in people’s thinking. Collecting garbage in containers of different colours allows for its future recycling. Normally, the waste is divided into the following categories: glass – clear, green and amber glass bottles and jars, steel – food, coffee, oil, paint and aerosol cans, bottle tops and jam-jar lids, aluminium – cooking foil, soft drink and beer cans, plastics - bottles; hazardous waste – leftovers from the office (toners, inks, refrigerating equipment, pharmaceuticals, and batteries).

Organic waste collected separately can be used for composting. All the garden and kitchen remnants including fruit and vegetable scraps and peels, coffee grounds, bread scraps, tea leaves and bags, vegetable cooking oil, egg shells, etc are good for this purpose and when composted can be used to fertilise your garden free of charge. Besides, completely removing organic waste from your garbage cans may also allow for less frequent waste collections as there will be nothing rotting.

EXAMPLE: In Derwentwater Hotel, Cumbria, UK the results of the policy of buying in bulk became reduced costs and improved customer’s satisfaction. 1,300 euro per year was saved by replacing individual soap and shampoo sachets with refillable containers. Bulk purchase allowed to buy new, better quality and more expensive toiletry products without increasing the costs, since bulk buying means refreshing the container instead of replacing them all the time. The products chosen also contributed towards the hotel's quality image – guests were impressed by Body Shop products instead of usual hotel-offered packages considered cheap and low quality ones. Moreover, the theft rate dropped drastically, since guests do not take away extra containers anymore, mainly because of their size (1 l), while previous small plastic ones were often regarded as a fair game.
EXAMPLE: The Royal Castle Hotel in Dartmouth, UK composts their organic waste and provides their staff who have gardens with this compost. The personnel in turn are encouraged to grow fresh herbs which the hotel buys from them. By the whole range of measures, the hotel has managed to cut down from filling 3 wheeled bins to 1, saving ₤7.80 each week.
