7.1.3. Fire Emergency Procedures for the Personnel

It is very important to inform your staff on the sequence of actions to be taken in case of fire. With fire safety trainings, the personnel should not be in panic, but will be able to act confidently and promptly. Remember to exercise regularly the steps described below!

  1. Call the local Fire Dept and provide clear information about your address, the location of fire and people endangered if possible.
  2. Try to fight the fire with an extinguisher only if you think that it is feasible.

The staff shall be trained well to use fire extinguishers and fire blanket, during the emergency there is no time to read the instructions.

Fire extinguishers

The fire extinguisher should match the type of fire you are going to fight. Extinguishers that contain water, for instance, are unsuitable for use on grease or in electrical fire. Multipurpose extinguishers of ABC type are universal and valid for all kinds of fire fighting.

How to use a fire extinguisher:

  1. Stand 2m away from the fire, with the back towards the exit.
  2. Pull the pin. This will unlock the operating lever.
  3. Aim low. Point the nozzle at the base of the fire
  4. Squeeze the lever above the handle. This discharges the extinguishing agent. Releasing the lever will cause the stop of the discharge.
  5. Sweep from one side to another. Moving slowly towards the fire, sweep forth and back until the flames go out. Watch the fire area, and if the fire re-ignites, repeat the process. If the fire does not start disappearing immediately, leave your efforts and escape at once.
  1. Help evacuate the people who need guidance (elderly, children, etc.)
  2. Outside, try to define the number of guests present at the accommodation and whether all of them escaped. Provide first aid to the injured in a safe area.
  3. Phone your insurance company and report the fire with details. Make an accurate damage inventory.
  4. Take care of your remaining property (Cover holes in the roof and windows. Invite an electrician to check for safety of the equipment and service ability, and a plumber to shut off and drain the system). Figure out a list of restoration activities, timeframe and costs.
