Section 6: Cleaning and Maintenance, Sanitary Rules

Introduction

Hygiene, sanitation, cleanliness as well as the overall impression of healthiness and care are among the most important aspects for the satisfaction of the people in any tourist accommodation. They are non-negotiable attributes of quality and respect towards the visitors - regardless of the degree of luxury or service category. Ensuring that the client stays overnight in a hygienic environment is a basic responsibility of the entrepreneur and requires a constant activity of cleaning and maintenance.

The failure to ensure proper cleaning and maintenance of an accommodation may have negative consequences for the health of the guests. Some serious diseases, e.g., legionellosis, might develop.

It is important to know that there can be a country-specific set of legal requirements on the sanitary and hygienic conditions for particular types of accommodations to comply with. So, for instance, in some countries it is required that the accommodation owner should complete a separate hygiene course. Before starting the accommodation you need to check what the requirements are in your home country.

The current section looks at the different aspects of indoor cleaning, points out potential health threats, provides tips for organizing cleaning activities efficiently and gives safety information on cleaners.
