Green tourism is a term that can be applied to any form of tourism that relates to the natural environment and cultural heritage of an area or that undertakes good environmental management (or green) practice. The green tourism includes three means by which a tourism practice would have to demonstrate practices for preventing or minimising impacts to the environment:
Nature based tourism refers to those tourism experiences that are directly or indirectly dependent on the natural environment and its attractions. It does not necessarily imply green or nature friendly dimension.
Ecotourism is a more ‘alternative’ form of tourism that is primarily nature-based. It must in some way assist with the conservation effort for biodiversity and involve the participation of local communities and cultures in a way that protects their quality of life and sustains their well being. It should involve a learning experience and be carried out in an ecologically sustainable way.
Agritourism links tourism activities with agriculture. It includes farm bed and breakfast, farm holidays, camping sites at the farm, recreation, cultural activities and working with the farmer, enjoying and exploring farm life. It can include also horse and carriage riding, educational tours, fairs and field days, farmers golf and many other activities. In the Netherlands Agritourism was especially stimulated for those farmers that needed an additional income when intensive cattle stock was reduced or changed to more extensive stock keeping. This proactive tourism encouragement policy together with the stimulation of regional products turned out to be very successful for local economy and environment, reducing the ammoniac of the intensive cattle stock holding.
