2.4.6. Quality Management

Tourism is a full grown industry in which each player has to face competition. To distinguish your accommodation from all the others, you need to deliver a special product and make this known to your potential guests/clients. Quality, in the sense of a special products or USP’s (Unique Selling Points) and transmitting this to your clients will be elaborated on in the module on marketing. In this unit we only discuss the delivery of quality products. A better product will make your guests/clients satisfied. The delivery of a quality product guests/clients and word of mouth promotion. However, if you want to sell your product for a higher price, you need to certify the quality of your product. There are many official quality standards which can be utilised to certify and label your service/product. Well known labels are, for example, GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) and certified organic food labels. Some of the quality standards relevant for the tourist industry are as follows: 

It is not compulsory to have one or more certificates. Most countries have set their own minimum standards for a large range of activities of companies. EU standards are usually more demanding than national standards. For example, to transport food from another continent into the EU, production methods according to HACCP are required for perishable products like fish. However, if you have a small shop at your farm to sell the same products, a HACCP label is not yet required.
